Hundreds of people gathered on the steps of the Finnish Parliament on recently to light 8,645 candles — one for each baby killed by abortion in Finland in 2024.
The event was a solemn pro-life remembrance organized by the Right to Life Association (Oikeus elämään ry).
The “Muistamme” (“In Remembrance”) vigil began with a spiritual gathering at Luther Church in Helsinki, followed by a procession to the Parliament steps. About 100 candle lighters who felt a personal connection to the issue of children lost through abortion, along with members of the public, participated in lighting the candles as around 200–300 people gathered overall.

Johannes Laitinen, the event organizer, said the candles were lit for the remembrance of these children.
“The purpose of the event was also to give a voice to the silent grief that many have experienced after abortion,” Laitinen said.
He added: “There were about one hundred pre-invited candle lighters on the steps to ensure that all the candles could be lit. We invited people who feel a personal connection to the issue of children lost through abortion. The public was also offered the opportunity to participate by lighting a candle. Around 200–300 people gathered at the Parliament steps.”
The first candle was lit by a woman named Eevi in memory of her child who she regrets aborting.
“I light this candle for you, Sami. I am grateful to be your mother. Thank you for being my guiding star. And thank you that I may look forward to being reunited with you after this life. Thank you, God the Father, for giving Your only Son as atonement for all our sins,” Eevi said.
Once all the candles were lit, participants observed a minute of silence on the national parliament steps in remembrance of the children lost to abortion. The sea of candlelight remained glowing through the Helsinki night, with selected volunteers keeping watch.
Passersby stopped to observe the display and take photos.
In a country of 5.6 million, the 8,645 abortions performed in 2024 represent a stark reminder of lives ended before birth.
