“TheChristianofthe21stcenturywilleitherbeamartyrorwillnotbeaChristian,”thearchbishopofSantiagoandprimateofChile,CardinalFernandoChomali,saidduringaseminarabouttheroleoffaithinpubliclife.
Thecardinalmadetheremarkduringhispresentationattheseminar“AndinEverythingCharity,”whichtookplaceontheoccasionofthecentenaryofPopePiusXI’sencyclicalQuasPrimas.
Theseminar’stitlewasinspiredbyaquotefromSt.Augustine.OrganizationsincludingtheCatholicUniversityofChile’slawdepartment,CommunityandJustice,andtheConBocaFoundationcollaboratedtohostaneventhighlightingcharityasthecentralpillarunitingsocial,cultural,andpoliticalefforts.
Chomaliopenedhispresentationwithastatementaboutthecurrentreality:“Wearegluttedwitheverything:withwords,withdiscourse,withso-calledfreedoms.Butatthesametime,wearefullofnothing.”
