Sarah Worthington King Peter, a socialite and philanthropist from Cincinnati by way of Philadelphia, came to Rome and fell in love with Catholicism. Her primary instructor and confessor at the time was a 30-year-old, Jesuit-educated Catholic priest who was intimately familiar with Protestant objections to the faith she was now embracing – and with social prejudice toward Catholics. His name was Gaspard Mermillod, and he would go on to influence Pope Leo XIII and become a Cardinal.
