Hundreds of women sue over contraceptive injections linked to brain tumors

WomeninAmericaandtheUnitedKingdomaretakinglegalactionagainstPfizerandotherbirthcontrolproducersafterastudyindicatedthatinjectablecontraceptiveswerefoundtocausebraintumors. Acasemanagementconferenceregardingthemulti-districtlitigationwasheldonMay30inPensacola,Florida,todiscussthenextstepsinthelawsuitsfiledagainstNewYork-basedPfizer.  Thelegalactionfollowsa2024Frenchstudythatfoundthattheuseofthecontraceptivemedicationmedroxyprogesterone,oftenknownunderPfizer’sbrandnameDepo-Provera,rendersawomanfivetimesmorelikelytodevelopameningiomabraintumor. Meningiomasareslow-growingtumorsthatareusuallybenignbutcancausesevereinjuryordeathiftheybecomelargeenoughtocompressthebrainorspinalcord. TheresearchstudyconductedbytheNationalAgencyforMedicinesandHealthProductsSafetyexamineddataon18,061women.Theparticipantswereonaveragearound57yearsoldandhadallundergoneintracranialsurgeriesformeningiomasbetween2009and2018.
