California Catholic school launches ‘house system’ to build community, foster leadership

ACatholicschoolinSouthernCaliforniaispreparingtolauncha“housesystem”thatitsayswillhelpstudentsconnectwithoneanotherandfosterleadershipamongyoungCatholicspreparingtogooutintotheworld.  JSerraCatholicHighSchoolinSanJuanCapistranosaidinapressreleasethatthehousearrangementwill“fostercommunity,providementorship,andcultivateleadershiprootedinGospelvalues.” Thesixhousesintowhichstudentscanbegrouped—Alta,Carmel,Monterey,SanOnofre,Petra,andVentura—are“eachnamedafterplacessignificanttothelifeofSt.JuniperoSerra.” Theschoolsaidthenewprogram“comesatacriticaltimeasyoungpeopleareexperiencinggreatersocialdisconnectionandmentalhealthchallengesthaneverbefore.”Itcitedstudiesindicatingthatyoungpeopleareexperiencingextremesocialdisconnectionwiththeirpeers,engagingin“70%lesssocialinteractionwiththeirfriends”co
