GoodFridayisthedaywerememberthatJesusdiedonthecrossforoursins.ThesameistrueofEasterSunday,wheneveryoneknowswecelebratethatherosefromthedeadintriumphoverdeath.
Thoughitmayhavebeenadayofwaitingforhisdisciples,JesuswasengagedinsomeofthemostdramaticandimportantworkofhismessianicmissiononHolySaturday–and ittookhimtothedepthsofhell.
Wait,what?Jesuswent tohell?
It’s rightthere intheancient Apostles’Creed:“[he]wascrucified,diedandwasburied; hedescendedintohell;onthethirddayheroseagainfromthedead…”(It’salsointhe AthanasianCreed.)
Toproperlyunderstandwhatisgoingonhere,therearetwothingsyouneedtoknow:
First, whenmostpeopleheartheword“hell,”theythinkofthe hellofthedamned,theplaceofeternalpunishmentforpeoplewhodonotdieinChrist.However,theterm“hell”cansometimeshaveabroadermeaningof“realmofthedead”forthosewhoarenotexperiencingthevisionofGod.
